The Power of Magickal Denial
"I put a spell on you... Because you're mine..." Credence Clearwater Revival

As a practicing Pagan, I cannot begin to count the number of times people, from all walks of life, have come to me asking about or requesting some sort of protection charm, spell, or ritual, or something to counter this or that negative magickal working which someone else has done against them. When you look throughout the internet or at the bookstores, there is a plethora of material covering these topics. But honestly? All of these things are trivial and meaningless ramblings, and are completely and totally unnecessary. There is not a protection spell, ritual, amulet, charm, incense, oil, chant, rite, or anything which can even begin to hold a candle (pardon the pun!) to the power of Magickal denial.

What is Magickal Denial?
Well, let me start by saying that it's not the kind of denial that psychologists are always warning you about. Magickal Denial is all about denying anyone else the ability to have any sort of power over you. When I was learning Tsalagi Didanvwisgi from an Elder, I asked him one time, "What do I do if someone uses their Medicine (magick) against me, or to do me harm?" He just laughed, and told me, "That's simple. You just stand up and speak to the Winds, tell them what the other person has done, laugh, and proclaim just how much stronger your Medicine is." Therein lies the secret- No one can hold any sort of magickal power over you, unless you allow them to.

Consider this: As Pagans, we acknowledge and affirm that we are a part of the All that Is, and that we are intimately connected with the Gods, because we are a part of the Gods, and the Gods are a part of us. That being true, then how is even remotely conceivable that anyone else be able to put any kind of spell upon us? I can just see that now; "Ok, Morrigan, I'm gonna put a binding on you and force you to do my bidding..." Yeah, right. As if THAT would work! And since we know for a fact that such a thing would never work against the Gods, why on earth would any of us believe or even think that it could ever work on us?

Ok, so someone has done a working or a spell against you. What do you do? Deny them the ability to be able to do such a thing. Reach deep down inside yourself, past all that conditioning and self-doubt, and realize Unity with the All that Is. You have the power within you, and no one can take that away from you unless you allow them to. Do you really want to allow someone to put a spell on you? Of course not! So why grant them the ability to do so? By denying them the power to have any control over you, you are re-affirming your connection with the Infinite. And is not connection with the All really what True Magick is all about?
